The terms can be confusing and sometimes used interchangeably. But that is incorrect. Let's set the record straight.

A Karat is a unit of purity and refers to gold. There are 24 karats in a whole. Therefore, if something is 24-karat, it is pure gold. 14-karat is 14 parts gold and 10 parts of another metal such as copper or silver. Copper or silver is used because pure gold is generally too soft to work with effectively.

A Carat is a unit of mass or weight for diamonds and other gemstones. One carat is 1/5 of a gram (200 milligrams). To put it in perspective: there are 453 grams in a pound; therefore, there are 2265 carats in a pound.
