Diamond Carat Weight (cont.)

Bezel Set Diamond Solitaire Ring

Historically, carat was derived from the Greek word keration (fruit of the carob). In olden days, carob seeds were used on precision scales because they were thought to be of uniform weight. This proved to be untrue. Carob seeds vary in weight as much as any other seed. This was cause for a fair amount of international squabbling and what could be termed 'carob confrontations'. It was not until 1907 that the metric carat was universally adopted.

A carat does not have anything to do with a diamond's quality. It simply gives you an idea of the size of the diamond – by weight.

How big a diamond looks is not necessarily an indicator of its weight. A deep cut diamond can look smaller than a shallow cut diamond, when in actuality it may weigh more.
