Diamond Color

The Eye of the Beholder

The color of a diamond can only accurately be determined when it is loose. The stone is inverted on a white background, next to another stone that has previously been graded. The gemologist then makes a determination after examining the stone in question with a 10x magnification jeweler's loupe.

The reason why the diamond has to be loose is that the setting can have an effect on the color as perceived by the naked eye. A white gold setting will serve to lessen the yellow tint, while a yellow gold setting will emphasize it. Although a more yellow stone will be less valuable, it does not necessarily follow that it will be less beautiful.

Certainly, the beauty of a diamond is in the eye of the beholder. Since each diamond, by fact of nature, is one of a kind, the color preference of the individual is every bit as personal and singular as the stone itself.
