One Million Carats

Diamond History (cont.)

Since 1956, one 60-mile stretch of coastline along the Orange River in South Africa has produced 1 million carats of diamonds each year. This operation is owned by Consolidated Mines of South West Africa. Consolidated Mines is a part of The De Beers Group. This is to say that De Beers dwarfs everyone else.

In 1979, the Argyle Pipe was discovered in Northwest Australia. It has become the world's largest volume producer of non-gemstone quality diamonds.

Since its discovery in 1906, the so-called "Crater of Diamonds" in Murphreesboro, Arkansas, has produced 60,000 diamonds.

Not just diamonds are forever. It seems that the same holds true for De Beers. Even though stones are being mined in Australia, South America, the United States, Canada, and Russia, De Beers still controls the export of 90 percent of today's diamonds.
